Iowa basketball entered the 1986-87 season as a preseason Top 10 team. After winning their first 17 games, including wins over #17 N.C. State, #8 Illinois, #3 Indiana, and #6 Purdue, they quickly rose the #1 in the country! Tom Davis' squad was led by 4 future NBA players. Roy Marble, BJ Armstrong, Kevin Gamble and Brad Lohaus. Junior guard Jeff Moe also contributed to Iowa's balanced scoring attack that saw all 5 Hawkeyes average double digits in scoring.
Iowa would finish the year 30-5 which earned them the #2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They disposed of Santa Clara, UTEP, and Oklahoma to reach the Elite 8 where they were defeated by #1 UNLV, 84-81.
